On January 14, 2021, Aperture hosted a conversation between writer Marjon Carlos and artist Dannielle Bowman, winner of the 2020 Aperture Portfolio Prize, to discuss Bowman’s project What Had Happened (2019–ongoing). Working beyond traditional forms of documentary photography, Bowman’s work aims to map Black American histories that have remained mostly unspoken, blending into them her own family history and perspectives. On one level, the pictures in What Had Happened are about the neighborhoods in and around the artist’s family home in Los Angeles. On another, Bowman’s work describes the passage of time and memories of home—or, more precisely, the homes one makes on leaving old ones, and the search for better places to put down new roots and grow.
